Among the various cast metals and alloys, cast irons account for the highest level of consumption, and an extensive body of scientific and practical knowledge has been developed about them. Those who are directly or indirectly involved in the production of cast iron components often regard iron casting as a simpler process compared with the casting of other metals.

The quality of any manufactured product is fundamentally influenced by the needs and culture of the society in which it is produced. For example, a country that relies primarily on manual transportation systems may be able to accept cast components of relatively low quality.

In the production technology of cast iron components, the design of the gating and feeding (riser) systems is one of the most fundamental stages, if not the most important. Today, this stage is recognized as a highly effective tool for controlling casting defects—particularly shrinkage defects—and for improving casting yield.

However, the design of gating and feeding systems cannot be carried out without considering the many variables that influence the quality of cast products. Factors such as the metallurgical quality of the molten metal, the composition and properties of the molding material, and the casting process itself all have a significant impact on the selection and design of an appropriate gating and feeding system. Therefore, the designer must identify and thoroughly understand these factors before selecting the most suitable system.

Ultimately, successful casting design is achieved when the designer, or the design team, works closely with the production department to develop a gating and feeding system that can, as far as possible, compensate for defects and shortcomings that may arise during the manufacturing process.
