Abstract

Rapid advances in science and technology, together with the globalization of the economy, industry, and technological development, have introduced new challenges and requirements for engineering education. Emerging concepts such as the global village, sustainable development, brain drain, and the global exchange of knowledge have fundamentally reshaped the educational landscape, requiring engineering programs to adapt to evolving national and international needs.

At the same time, countries must define their educational priorities based on their comparative advantages, economic objectives, and long-term national development strategies. In response to these challenges, the paper argues that Iran should carefully examine engineering education systems around the world while developing its own national model of engineering education, tailored to the country’s unique economic, industrial, and social conditions.

The author emphasizes that simply replicating educational models from other countries may not adequately address Iran’s specific development needs. Instead, a national engineering education model should promote sustainable development, strengthen cooperation between universities and industry, and ensure that both institutions achieve their educational and economic objectives.

The proposed model highlights the importance of preparing engineers with strong technical competence, professional commitment, and ethical responsibility. Engineering graduates should possess not only advanced technical knowledge but also a deep appreciation for their profession and the ability to apply technology to enhance national productivity, economic growth, and public welfare.

Despite more than six decades of economic planning and significant national advantages—including abundant mineral and natural resources, a strategic geographical location, and a highly capable workforce—Iran has not yet achieved the level of industrialization seen in many developed countries. Consequently, its engineering education system must address challenges that differ from those of industrialized and newly industrialized nations.

The paper concludes by presenting a series of recommendations and strategic proposals for developing a nationally appropriate model of metallurgical engineering education capable of supporting Iran’s long-term industrial and technological development.
