Abstract
This paper explores the fundamental concepts of engineering, engineer, technology, and profession, providing clear definitions and examining the distinctive characteristics of each. The authors discuss the nature of engineering as a profession and its close relationship with technological development, scientific knowledge, and societal progress.
The paper also highlights the contributions of some of the most renowned engineers in Iran and around the world, illustrating the historical and contemporary impact of engineering achievements on civilization and industrial advancement.
Finally, the study emphasizes the vital role of engineers in addressing the fourteen major challenges facing humanity in the twenty-first century. It argues that engineers are central to developing sustainable, innovative, and practical solutions to global issues, including energy, infrastructure, environmental protection, health, manufacturing, and technological innovation. The paper underscores the importance of engineering as a profession dedicated to improving quality of life and advancing economic and social development.
