Abstract
This paper examines the historical development of engineering education in Europe, with particular emphasis on metallurgy, materials science, and materials engineering. It traces the evolution of these disciplines from the Renaissance period onward, highlighting the scientific, technological, and industrial contributions of prominent engineers and pioneers whose work laid the foundation for modern materials engineering.
The study reviews the establishment and expansion of European universities and academic institutions that played a key role in advancing education and research in metallurgy and materials engineering. It also explores how the close interaction between scientific discovery, technological innovation, and industrial development contributed to the emergence of modern engineering education systems.
Furthermore, the paper presents a comparative analysis between the historical development of engineering education in Europe and the corresponding status of engineering education in Iran during the same period. The authors identify the major factors that enabled Europe to achieve remarkable progress in metallurgy and materials engineering, including the growth of scientific institutions, industrial infrastructure, technological innovation, and educational reform.
By examining the historical evolution of engineering education, the paper provides valuable perspectives on the relationship between higher education, scientific advancement, and industrial development. It also offers insights that may support the future development and modernization of engineering education in Iran.
