Abstract

The increasing intensity of global competition has compelled companies to transform their operational approaches from repetitive practices to innovation-driven strategies. This shift, together with the economic conditions and industrial characteristics of each country, has introduced new requirements for engineering education. Addressing these requirements requires the restructuring of engineering education institutions to better meet the current and future needs of industry.

The objective of this study was to identify the essential requirements of engineering education in relation to the needs of industry in Iran. This applied research employed a descriptive survey methodology. The study population consisted of distinguished Iranian engineers, of whom 30 experts were selected through purposive sampling. The role and importance of university–industry collaboration in engineering education were first examined through document analysis. Subsequently, data obtained from semi-structured interviews with the selected experts were analyzed using qualitative coding and categorization techniques.

The findings indicate that addressing the challenges facing engineering education and industry requires continuous and effective collaboration among universities, industry, and government. Multiple channels of interaction—including education, research, consulting services, and professional conferences—play a vital role in strengthening university–industry partnerships.

In addition to technical knowledge and expertise, engineering graduates should possess strong competencies in engineering design and implementation, problem-solving, teamwork, communication, creativity and innovation, lifelong learning, professional ethics, and motivation, all of which are considered essential for long-term professional success.

The study concludes that engineering education systems can better respond to the present and future needs of industry by emphasizing close collaboration with industry, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experience, maintaining flexibility, incorporating industrial requirements into curriculum planning, continuously improving educational programs, and reforming student admission policies.
